Use a print out or picture on an overhead to discuss how the alveoli (air sacs) in lungs collapse.
During our tobacco unit I like to try to engage students instead of talking at them endlessly. Using psychomotor activities can help engage students who are hands on. I found this activity a few years ago somewhere on the web. It takes about 5 minutes and the students seem to remember what teh disease emphysema upon completion of this activity.
Materials: Small straws such as coffee stirrer. If using drinking straws make sure the passageway is narrow.
Procedure:
Pass out one straw per student.
Explain to students that emphysema can be linked to smoking. Students will attempt to breath only through the straws to show them what having emphysema might feel like. Tell them to only breath through their mouths; therefore, they may need to plug their noses. Set the timer for about a minute. Most likely students will not be able to breath through only the straw for the entire minute as they will not receive enough oxygen. Ask students if they could imagine walking around or doing activities with this small amount of oxygen. Ask students how they felt while breathing through the straw.

I have done this with both 7th grade and high school students. I find it works better for high school kids within my setting because they will pick up their straws and I have not yet had anyone try shooting spit balls. If your class is mature this will be an enjoyable activity.

I get what you're trying to do, and I don't disapprove, but for your own edification, your drinking straw exercise more accurately represents a severe asthma attack, not what it feels like to have emphysema. My airways can be completely open with no constriction, but because my lungs lack elasticity they can't expelled CO2. This means that I can inhale as deeply as I like with no sense of 'tightness' but the oxygen will not displace the CO2 in my lungs, so even inhaling deeply and freely will not alleviate the sense of suffocation. In my experience, emphysema is more like drowning on air than not being able to inhale.
